About Elbow

Elbow is a British indie rock band that emerged from the vibrant Manchester music scene in the early 1990s. Formed in Bury by vocalist Guy Garvey, drummer Richard Jupp, organist Craig Potter, guitarist Mark Potter, and bassist Pete Turner, the group faced early challenges, including being dropped from Island Records after a major label reshuffle. They persevered through independent releases before signing with V2 Records, where their cinematic and emotionally rich sound gained notable attention.

Their debut album, "Asleep in the Back" (2001), earned critical acclaim and a Mercury Prize nomination, establishing the lush, introspective style that defines their music. Elbow’s breakthrough arrived with 2008’s multi-platinum "The Seldom Seen Kid," which won the Mercury Prize and marked the start of their self-produced era under Craig Potter’s guidance. This creative momentum continued with albums like "Build a Rocket Boys!" (2011) and "The Take Off and Landing of Everything" (2014), the latter becoming their first UK chart-topper.

Elbow’s profile grew significantly during the 2012 London Olympics, contributing the theme "First Steps" and performing at the closing ceremony, further cementing their cultural significance. After drummer Richard Jupp’s departure in 2016, the band returned with chart-topping releases "Little Fictions" (2017) and "Giants of All Sizes" (2019). Their ninth album, "Flying Dream 1" (2021), was uniquely recorded at Brighton’s Theatre Royal amid pandemic restrictions, showcasing a more intimate sound. Most recently, "Audio Vertigo" (2024) reveals a groove-driven evolution, underscoring Elbow’s enduring artistic vitality and influence in the UK music scene.
