About Stornoway

Stornoway, named after the town on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, is a British folk-pop band that first came together at Oxford University. The group features singer and guitarist Brian Briggs—an ornithologist—keyboardist and string player Jonathan Quinn (also noted as a Russian translator), and brothers Ollie and Rob Steadman on bass and drums. Their music is celebrated for its jangly acoustic sound, thoughtful lyrics rich with themes of wildlife, literature, and youthful romance, drawing comparisons to acts like Belle & Sebastian, James, and XTC.

The band first gained national attention in 2009 after headlining the BBC Introducing stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend and playing at Glastonbury Festival. Their debut album, "Beachcomber’s Windowsill" (2010), reached number 14 on the UK Albums Chart and featured popular singles such as "Zorbing"—inspired by the adventurous sport of rolling downhill inside a transparent sphere—and "Unfaithful." Stornoway’s follow-up albums, "Tales from Terra Firma" (2013) and "Bonxie" (2015), produced by Gil Norton, incorporated richer psychedelic and Baroque pop textures, expanding their sonic palette.

After an amicable split in 2016, Stornoway reassembled as a trio in 2022, returning to the stage with festival appearances and releasing their fourth studio album, "Dig the Mountain!" (2023). Produced by Mike Lindsay of Tunng, the album features guest contributions from artists like Sam Lee and Fyfe Dangerfield, showcasing the band’s continued evolution while preserving the evocative charm that earned them a devoted fanbase.
