About Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath, formed in 1968 in Birmingham, England, is universally recognized as a pioneering force in heavy metal, shaping the genre’s sound and spawning numerous subgenres. Initially named the Polka Tulk Blues Band before briefly becoming Earth, the band settled on Black Sabbath after creating the title track inspired by the 1963 Boris Karloff horror film. The original lineup—Ozzy Osbourne’s raw, primal vocals, Tony Iommi’s innovative, downtuned guitar riffs born from a factory accident, Geezer Butler’s thunderous bass, and Bill Ward’s powerful drumming—crafted a dark, occult-themed sound that redefined hard rock.

Their self-titled debut album (1970), recorded mostly in one day and released on Friday the 13th, introduced now-classic tracks like "Black Sabbath" and "N.I.B." Despite early critical skepticism, the band’s follow-up, "Paranoid" (1970), became a major breakthrough with enduring hits like "Iron Man" and "War Pigs," topping UK charts and achieving multi-platinum success. Albums such as "Master of Reality" (1971) and "Vol. 4" (1972) showcased Iommi’s groundbreaking down-tuning techniques, influencing doom, sludge, and stoner metal styles.

After Ozzy’s departure in 1979 due to internal struggles, Ronnie James Dio revitalized the band with the critically acclaimed "Heaven and Hell" (1980) and "Mob Rules" (1981). Despite various lineup changes, Black Sabbath reunited with the original members for the Grammy-winning live album "Reunion" (1998). Their final studio album, "13" (2013), produced by Rick Rubin, received widespread praise and won another Grammy. Black Sabbath concluded their monumental career with The End Tour (2016–2017), leaving an indelible legacy as the architects of heavy metal and inspiring countless artists across generations.
