About Rage Against the Machine

Rage Against the Machine, formed in Los Angeles in the early 1990s, stands as a revolutionary force in alternative metal and rap rock. Comprising vocalist Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk, the band masterfully blends rap, hardcore punk, funk, and metal with fiercely political and anti-authoritarian messages. Their 1992 self-titled debut album, propelled by the iconic protest anthem "Killing in the Name," quickly gained triple-platinum status despite its controversial cover featuring a self-immolated Buddhist monk. This powerful debut established their signature style—combining aggressive soundscapes with sharp critiques of systemic oppression, corporate greed, and cultural imperialism.

Rage Against the Machine solidified their influence with platinum-selling albums "Evil Empire" (1996) and "The Battle of Los Angeles" (1999), both debuting at number one on the charts. Tracks like "Bulls on Parade," "Guerrilla Radio," and "Tire Me" earned the band multiple Grammy Awards, highlighting their fusion of hard-hitting music and social activism. Beyond their recordings, Rage engaged in activism by supporting organizations such as FAIR and Rock for Choice and staging politically charged demonstrations—including famously disrupting the New York Stock Exchange for a video shoot.

Following internal tensions, de la Rocha left the band in 2000, leading to a hiatus after releasing the covers album "Renegades." The remaining members formed Audioslave with Chris Cornell, yet Rage’s impact endured. Reunions starting in 2007 and the later creation of Prophets of Rage kept their revolutionary spirit alive. Their music’s resurgence during the 2020 protests against police brutality reaffirmed Rage Against the Machine’s enduring role as a potent voice for social justice and radical change.
