About The Animals

The Animals, hailing from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1963, are celebrated as one of Britain’s most influential rhythm and blues bands. Emerging from the Alan Price Rhythm & Blues Combo, the lineup featured Eric Burdon on vocals, Alan Price on keyboards, Hilton Valentine on guitar, Bryan "Chas" Chandler on bass, and John Steel on drums. Their breakthrough came with the haunting 1964 rendition of "The House of the Rising Sun," a blues-infused track that soared to number one internationally and showcased their gritty, soulful sound. This success placed The Animals alongside contemporaries like The Rolling Stones as pioneers of the British Invasion with a distinctly raw edge.

Following their iconic hit, The Animals delivered a string of powerful singles including "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," "We Gotta Get Out of This Place," and "It's My Life," blending passionate intensity with more accessible pop elements. Despite their rapid rise, internal tensions—particularly over royalties linked to "The House of the Rising Sun"—led to Alan Price’s departure in 1965. The original band dissolved by 1966, but Eric Burdon revived the group under the name Eric Burdon & the Animals, embracing psychedelic influences in albums such as "Winds of Change" (1967) and "The Twain Shall Meet" (1968). This era introduced new talents like guitarist Andy Summers, who would later gain fame with The Police.

The original members reunited in 1975 for "Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted," revisiting their rhythm and blues roots, and again in 1983 with "Ark," which achieved moderate success. Their lasting impact on rock and blues was formally recognized with their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. The Animals remain iconic for their fierce energy, innovative blues-rock fusion, and enduring classics that influenced generations of musicians worldwide.
