About Laura Branigan

Laura Branigan was a distinguished American pop singer, songwriter, and actress, whose powerful voice and infectious hits defined much of the 1980s pop and dance music landscape. Born in 1952 in Brewster, New York, Branigan initially pursued acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Her early career included touring as a backing vocalist for Leonard Cohen in the late 1970s, which paved the way for her signing with Atlantic Records and launching a solo music career.

Branigan burst onto the scene with her 1982 debut album, "Branigan," which featured the international hit "Gloria." This reimagined Italian pop song climbed to No. 2 on the U.S. charts and earned her a Grammy nomination, solidifying her place in the MTV-driven pop era. Her distinctive sound combined synth-driven, club-ready beats with emotive ballads, drawing comparisons to contemporaries such as Sade and Kim Wilde.

She followed with a succession of successful albums, including "Branigan 2" (1983), "Self Control" (1984), "Hold Me" (1985), and "Touch" (1987). These records produced enduring singles like "Self Control," "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," "Solitaire," and "The Power of Love." Branigan’s music also found a place in iconic films like "Flashdance" and "Ghostbusters," further cementing her cultural impact.

In addition to her solo work, she collaborated with notable artists such as Michael Bolton and David Hasselhoff. Although her commercial peak was during the 1980s, Branigan continued performing internationally in later years, returning to acting and theater following a career slowdown in the 1990s. She passed away in 2004 from a brain aneurysm, but her legacy endures through posthumous compilations like "The Platinum Collection" and "Shine On: The Ultimate Collection," keeping her anthemic voice alive in pop music history.
