About The Fall

The Fall, formed in Manchester in 1977, stands as one of Britain’s most enduring and influential post-punk bands. Fronted by the indomitable Mark E. Smith, whose abrasive vocal delivery and cryptic, sardonic lyrics became the band’s hallmark, The Fall pioneered a sound that fused garage rock, Krautrock, and dub with hypnotic, repetitive rhythms and unconventional song structures. Over a remarkable four-decade career, Smith remained the sole constant amid frequent lineup changes, guiding the band through constant reinvention.

Their debut album, "Live at the Witch Trials" (1979), and the critically acclaimed "Hex Enduction Hour" (1982) captured their raw, abrasive energy, setting the stage for their influential legacy. The band's sound evolved notably after Smith married American guitarist Brix Smith in 1983, whose melodic sensibilities brought greater accessibility. Albums such as "The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall" (1984) and "This Nation's Saving Grace" (1985) produced UK Top 40 hits including "Hit the North" and a cover of The Kinks' "Victoria."

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, The Fall continued experimenting with their sound, blending dance elements on "Extricate" (1990) and returning to garage rock with albums like "Fall Heads Roll" (2005). Their final studio album, "New Facts Emerge" (2017), closed a monumental chapter just before Smith’s passing in 2018. The Fall’s uncompromising artistry and innovation influenced a wide range of alternative and indie acts, including Sonic Youth, Pavement, LCD Soundsystem, and Gorillaz, cementing their legacy as a uniquely restless and vital force in modern music history.
