About Billy Joel

Billy Joel, born in the Bronx and raised in Hicksville, Long Island, is a seminal figure in American music whose career soared from the early 1970s through the 1990s and beyond. Introduced to piano as a child, Joel briefly pursued a career as a teenage boxer, fighting 22 matches before a pivotal moment watching The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 inspired him to focus solely on music. Early in his journey, he performed with various local bands such as the Echoes, the Hassles, and the experimental duo Attila. Despite personal struggles, including depression and a brief stint playing lounge piano under the pseudonym Bill Martin, Joel's persistence culminated in his breakthrough with the 1973 album "Piano Man," whose title track became a beloved Top 40 hit.

Joel’s distinctive style blends Beatles-esque melodies, Tin Pan Alley, and Broadway influences. His 1977 album "The Stranger" propelled him to superstardom with classics like "Just the Way You Are," which earned Grammy Awards for Record and Song of the Year. He sustained his success with chart-topping albums such as "52nd Street" (1978), which won Album of the Year, and "Glass Houses" (1980), featuring the hit "It’s Still Rock ’n’ Roll to Me." The 1980s saw critically acclaimed releases like "An Innocent Man" (1983), inspired in part by his relationship with model Christie Brinkley, and chart-toppers like "Uptown Girl" and "Tell Her About It." Joel’s 1989 album "Storm Front" included the iconic number-one single "We Didn’t Start the Fire."

Beyond recording, Joel toured extensively worldwide, including a historic 1987 USSR tour documented in "Kontsert." He continued recording with albums like "River of Dreams" (1993) and explored classical music with "Fantasies & Delusions" (2001). His vast influence extends to the Broadway stage with the musical "Movin’ Out" (2002). Long renowned for his energetic live performances, Billy Joel’s ongoing Madison Square Garden residency since 2014 cements his status as a timeless storyteller and musical innovator.
