About Michael Monroe

Michael Monroe, born Matti Fagerholm on June 17, 1960, in Helsinki, Finland, is a seminal figure in the hard rock and glam-punk scenes. Initially a saxophonist in several Finnish bands during the late 1970s, Monroe transitioned to lead vocals and co-founded the trailblazing band Hanoi Rocks in 1980. Hanoi Rocks carved out a unique niche by fusing punk’s raw energy and garage rock grit with a flamboyant glam aesthetic marked by flashy outfits, heavy makeup, and teased hair—years before the glam metal explosion on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip. The band’s classic lineup, including guitarists Andy McCoy and Nasty Suicide, bassist Sam Yaffa, and drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley, gained a devoted following with landmark albums like "Bangkok Shocks" (1981), "Back to the Mystery City" (1983), and "Two Steps from the Move" (1984). Their rising momentum was tragically halted when Razzle died in a 1984 car accident involving Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil, leading to Hanoi Rocks’ breakup in 1985.

After relocating to New York City, Monroe launched a solo career, releasing the introspective "Nights Are So Long" (1987) before achieving greater commercial success with "Not Fakin’ It" (1989) in the U.S. Over four decades, he has remained a dynamic presence, consistently releasing solo albums such as "Sensory Overdrive" (2011), "Blackout States" (2015), "One Man Gang" (2019), and the energizing "I Live Too Fast to Die Young!" (2022). Monroe also collaborated with notable artists like Steve Stevens in Jerusalem Slim and reunited with former bandmates for projects like Demolition 23. Revered for his charismatic stage presence and influential songwriting, Michael Monroe continues to embody the spirit of glam-punk, inspiring generations with his relentless dedication to rock ’n’ roll.
