About Musica Alta Ripa

Musica Alta Ripa, founded in Hanover, Germany, in 1984, is a distinguished ensemble celebrated for its historically informed interpretations of 17th- and 18th-century music. The group’s name, meaning "Music of the High Riverbank," alludes to an old Latin translation linked to Hanover’s ancient etymology. Maintaining a remarkably stable core lineup over the decades, the ensemble features violinists Anne Röhrig and Ulla Bundies, recorder virtuoso Danya Segal, cellist Albert Brüggen, and harpsichordist Bernward Lohr. Each member has honed their craft under pioneers of the early music revival, including Sigiswald Kuijken, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and Kees Boeke.

Musica Alta Ripa’s extensive discography, largely recorded on the audiophile MDG label, began with their acclaimed 1990 debut album of Handel’s cantatas and chamber works. Their repertoire spans celebrated Baroque figures such as Telemann, Bach, and Hasse, with a particular emphasis on chamber music. The ensemble later broadened its artistic horizons by collaborating with Deutsche Harmonia Mundi on the innovative album "Mother" (year not specified), which gracefully combines Baroque compositions with contemporary sounds featuring soprano Dima Orsho.

Beyond their musical achievements, Musica Alta Ripa is also committed to cultural engagement, fostering connections between native Germans and Syrian refugees in Hanover. This dedication positions them as not only guardians of Baroque music but also active participants in social dialogue through the universal language of music.
