About The Academic

The Academic is an Irish indie rock band formed in Mullingar, a rural town in Ireland’s midlands, by childhood friends Craig Fitzgerald, Dean Gavin, and brothers Matthew and Stephen Murtagh. United by a shared passion for early 2000s New York rock revival bands like The Strokes, Interpol, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, they crafted a distinctive sound deeply rooted in post-punk influences and catchy, energetic melodies. Their friendship and musical journey began during school years, where their diverse tastes helped shape the band’s authentic and fresh approach to indie rock.

Starting modestly with local battle of the bands contests and intimate pub gigs, The Academic steadily built a loyal following and expanded their reach. Their breakthrough came with the release of their debut album, "Tales From The Backseat" (2018), which topped the official Irish album chart and solidified their reputation as one of Ireland’s leading contemporary rock acts. Since then, they have headlined sold-out shows and performed at major festivals across Ireland, the UK, Europe, and the US. Sharing stages with prominent artists such as Twenty One Pilots, The Strokes, and Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Academic continue to captivate audiences worldwide with their vibrant performances and enduring appeal. Their evolution from a close-knit group of friends into an internationally recognized indie rock force underscores their lasting impact on the modern music scene.
