About Jars of Clay

Jars of Clay emerged in 1993 from Greenville College, Illinois, as pioneers of the alternative contemporary Christian music (CCM) movement. Founded by singer Dan Haseltine, keyboardist Charlie Lowell, guitarist Stephen Mason, and later joined by Matt Odmark, the band quickly distinguished itself by blending spiritually meaningful lyrics with an acoustic-driven, folk-rock sound. Their self-titled debut album (1995) featured the crossover hit "Flood," which transcended Christian radio to climb mainstream pop charts, earning double-platinum status and breaking new ground for faith-based artists in secular markets.

With their signature fusion of introspective Christian themes and sophisticated alternative rock arrangements, Jars of Clay continued to build on their success. Albums such as "Much Afraid" (1997), which won a Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album, and "If I Left the Zoo" (1999), certified gold, solidified their influence within both CCM and alternative music. The band’s evolving sound is marked by records like "The Eleventh Hour" (2002), the acoustic collection "Furthermore" (2003), and "Redemption Songs" (2005), showcasing their versatility and depth.

In subsequent years, Jars of Clay incorporated ’80s-inspired synth textures in "Long Fall Back to Earth" (2009) and experimented with a grittier, bass-heavy tone on "Inland" (2013), produced by Tucker Martine. Throughout their career, they have balanced mainstream appeal with faith-driven messages, inspiring countless artists and maintaining a lasting legacy as one of contemporary Christian music’s most respected and commercially successful bands.
