About Giles Smith

Giles Smith is best known for his dual legacy as an influential figure in both music and journalism. In the late 1980s, he emerged as a key collaborator with Martin Newell’s indie pop/rock band Cleaners From Venus. Smith contributed keyboards, vocals, and co-wrote several songs, bringing a distinctive melodic sensibility to the band's witty, antiestablishment sound. Among their work, the song "Clara Bow," co-written by Smith and Newell, remains a standout example of their infectious pop craftsmanship. Although Cleaners From Venus never achieved significant commercial success, Smith’s creative partnership with Newell highlighted his sharp pop instincts and artistic integrity within the fiercely independent music scene.

Transitioning from music to journalism around 1990, Giles Smith carved out a respected career writing for prominent publications such as The Independent, Q, Mojo, The New Yorker, and Vogue. His unique perspective on the music industry and creative ambition culminated in his memoir, *Lost in Music* (year not specified), which offers an honest and nuanced account of his musical journey. Unlike typical rock autobiographies, the book explores the paradox of chasing commercial success while remaining part of a committedly independent band, capturing Smith’s rare insight as both musician and writer. This blend of authentic storytelling and artistic reflection has solidified Giles Smith’s enduring presence in music history and journalism alike.
