About Andreas Scholl

Andreas Scholl is widely recognized as one of the leading countertenors specializing in Baroque music. Born and raised in Kiedrich, Germany, he was immersed in choral singing from an early age, thanks to his father’s role as director of the prestigious Kiedricher Chorbuben choir. Although Scholl’s speaking voice is baritone, his extraordinary ability to sing in the soprano range revealed a rare countertenor talent, which vocal coaches nurtured. Inspired by early pioneers like Alfred Deller and James Bowman, Scholl cultivated a deep passion for early music while also exploring diverse genres; notably, he ventured into popular music with his 2007 crossover album "Andreas Scholl Goes Pop."

Scholl refined his artistry at Switzerland’s Schola Cantorum Basiliensis from 1987 to 1993, studying under eminent teachers René Jacobs and Richard Levitt. His professional breakthrough came in 1993 when he stepped in for Jacobs at a major concert in France, capturing the attention of conductor William Christie. This opportunity launched an extensive recording career marked by collaborations with leading early music ensembles. While Scholl initially focused on concert performances, he made his operatic debut in 1998 as Bertarido in Handel’s "Rodelinda" at Glyndebourne, solidifying his presence on the operatic stage.

Throughout his career, Andreas Scholl has received numerous prestigious awards, including Gramophone Awards for Vivaldi’s "Stabat Mater" (1996) and Caldara’s "Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo" (1997), the Cannes Classical Award for English folk songs (1998), multiple ECHO Classic Awards, and the Classical Brit Singer of the Year in 2006 for "Arias for Senesino." Beyond performance, he remains dedicated to nurturing new talent, returning to teach at his alma mater and contributing significantly to the preservation and promotion of early music.
