About Ivan Lins

Ivan Lins, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1945, is a revered Brazilian composer, vocalist, and pianist whose sophisticated blend of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), jazz, and pop has captivated audiences worldwide since the early 1970s. Spending part of his childhood in Boston due to his father’s academic pursuits at MIT, Lins absorbed a rich tapestry of American music influences, particularly Disney soundtracks and big-band arrangements like those by Billy May for Frank Sinatra. This early exposure helped shape his distinctive reedy baritone and nuanced phrasing.

After earning a degree in chemical engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Lins transitioned fully to music, gaining widespread recognition when iconic singer Elis Regina recorded his song "Madalena" in 1970. The track became a Brazilian and international classic, later covered by legends such as Ella Fitzgerald. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, his acclaimed albums—including "Modo Livre" (1974), "A Noite" (1979), and "Novo Tempo" (1980)—established his presence in Brazil’s music scene.

Lins’ international breakthrough came through collaborations with renowned artists and producers like Quincy Jones and George Benson. Benson’s recording of "Dinorah Dinorah" on the chart-topping album "Give Me the Night" and Jones’ Grammy-winning instrumental rendition of Lins’ "Velas" on "The Dude" propelled his music further into global jazz circles. His compositions have been embraced by jazz greats such as Sarah Vaughan, Manhattan Transfer, and The Crusaders, while his 1989 English-language debut, "Love Dance," broadened his appeal.

Earning multiple Latin Grammy Awards, notably for "Cantando Histórias" (2005), "Regência: Vince Mendoza" (2009), and "América, Brasil" (2014)—the latter winning Album of the Year—Ivan Lins continues to evolve artistically. His 2023 orchestral masterpiece, "My Heart Speaks," featuring the 91-piece Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra alongside guest artists Dianne Reeves and Randy Brecker, underscores his enduring influence on Brazilian music and global jazz, blending timeless melodies with rich cultural textures.
