About MF DOOM

MF DOOM, born Daniel Dumile in 1971 in London to a Trinidadian mother and Zimbabwean father, is a seminal figure in underground hip-hop known for his intricate lyricism and innovative, sample-rich production. Relocating to Long Island, New York, during childhood, Dumile first garnered attention as Zev Love X in the early ’90s rap group K.M.D., which released the critically praised album "Mr. Hood" (1991) under Elektra Records. The tragic death of his brother and K.M.D. member DJ Sub-Roc in 1993, combined with the shelving of their politically charged follow-up album "Bl_ck B_st_rds," led Dumile to withdraw from the music scene for several years.

Emerging in 1999 with the masked persona MF DOOM—an homage to Marvel’s Dr. Doom—he captivated audiences with his enigmatic presence and complex wordplay on his solo debut "Operation: Doomsday" (1999). Known for maintaining anonymity and occasionally sending imposters to live shows, DOOM created a mystique that set him apart in hip-hop. His versatility shone through various alter egos, including King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn, with standout albums like "Take Me to Your Leader" (2003) and "Vaudeville Villain" (2003).

Collaborations further expanded his influence, notably the genre-defining "Madvillainy" (2004) with producer Madlib and "The Mouse and the Mask" (2005) with Danger Mouse, which embraced Adult Swim’s unique culture and reached the Billboard 200. Other significant projects include "MM… Food?" (2004) and "Born Like This" (2009), featuring guest verses from Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, as well as later partnerships like JJ DOOM’s "Key to the Kuffs" (2012) and "NehruvianDOOM" (2014) with Bishop Nehru.

Despite his underground roots, MF DOOM’s creativity and distinctive style resonated beyond niche audiences, appearing on projects with Gorillaz and influencing generations of artists. His legacy endures as a masked outlaw who redefined hip-hop with intelligence, innovation, and an unmistakable voice.
