About Nèg' Marrons

Nèg' Marrons is a renowned French reggae and hip-hop duo, celebrated for over 25 years of vibrant musical influence and more than a million records sold worldwide. Comprising childhood friends Jacky Brown and Ben-J, who hail from Cape Verde and Congo respectively, the pair grew up in the Parisian suburb of Garges-lès-Gonesse. They first rose to prominence in the late 1990s with their breakthrough single "La Monnaie" (1995), which gained widespread attention through its inclusion in the film *Raï*. This early success led to a contract with Sony Music and set the stage for their enduring career.

Their debut album, *Rue Case Nègre* (1997), instantly went gold, solidifying their place in the French music scene. Known for blending reggae rhythms with hip-hop energy, Nèg' Marrons quickly became key figures within the Secteur Ä collective. Beyond performing, they demonstrated business acumen by founding the label Première Classe, fostering new talent and expanding their creative reach. Throughout the 2000s, iconic anthems like "Le Bilan" and "Tout le Monde Debout" cemented their legacy as voices of both festive celebration and social consciousness.

Nèg' Marrons have also collaborated with an impressive roster of international artists, including Wyclef Jean, Cesária Évora, Tonton David, Amadou & Mariam, and Alpha Blondy. With multiple gold and platinum certifications, their music continues to resonate, bridging African-inspired sounds with urban French culture, making them enduring icons in the landscape of French reggae and hip hop.
