About Todd Terry

Todd Terry, a Brooklyn-born pioneer, stands as a foundational figure in the evolution of house music, particularly shaping the New York house scene from the 1980s onward. Launching his career as a teenage DJ spinning hip-hop and Italian disco, Terry embraced house music in the mid-1980s, crafting a distinctive sound that fused classic disco samples, Chicago house grooves, and hip-hop’s energetic breakbeats. His early work includes the influential 1987 single "Alright Alright" and the groundbreaking 1988 collaboration with hip-hop group the Jungle Brothers on "I'll House You," a key track in popularizing hip-house beyond Chicago.

Operating under multiple aliases such as Royal House, the Todd Terry Project, Black Riot, and Gypsymen, he delivered club anthems like "Weekend" and "Bango (To the Batmobile)," the latter sampling Arthur Russell’s work. Terry’s impact extended globally with his 1995 remix of Everything But the Girl’s "Missing," which became a worldwide hit, selling millions and revitalizing the duo’s career. His 1997 album *Ready for a New Day* featured collaborations with powerhouse vocalists Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown, producing garage house classics like "Keep on Jumpin'" and "Something Goin’ On" that topped both Billboard club charts and U.K. charts.

Expanding his musical reach, Terry explored darker drum’n’bass sounds on his 1999 album *Resolutions*. Beyond producing, he founded influential labels such as Freeze Records and In House Records, nurturing fresh talent while consistently releasing new material into the 2020s. His extensive remix portfolio includes artists like Björk, Janet Jackson, and Annie Lennox, alongside recent collaborations with Kevin Saunderson, Robin S., and the House Gospel Choir. Todd Terry’s innovative blend of genres and enduring output cements his legacy as a seminal architect of house music’s evolution and global influence.
