About Thomas Dunford

Born in Paris in 1988, Thomas Dunford is one of the most acclaimed lutenists of his generation, renowned for his versatility as a soloist, chamber musician, and ensemble leader. Beginning his lute studies at the age of nine, Dunford quickly distinguished himself by earning first prize honors at the Conservatoire Supérieure de Paris in 2006 under Charles-Edouard Fantin. He then refined his artistry at Basel’s Schola Cantorum with the legendary Hopkinson Smith, while also attending masterclasses with iconic figures such as Julian Bream, Paul O'Dette, and Rolf Lislevand.

Dunford’s early career included a unique blend of music and theater, performing as a lutenist in a production of Shakespeare’s *Twelfth Night* at the renowned Comédie Française. His international presence has since expanded to prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall in London, and the Palau de la Música Catalana, with tours across Europe, Asia, and South America.

A former member of Ensemble Marsyas, where he explored a fusion of classical and jazz influences, Dunford founded the ensemble Jupiter in 2018, focusing on showcasing young, emerging talents. His discography spans notable labels such as Alpha, Hyperion, and Erato. Highlights include his solo debut *Dowland: Lachrimae* (2013), Jupiter’s *Vivaldi* (2019), and acclaimed collaborations with mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre on *Amazone* (2021) and *Eternal Heaven: Handel* (2022). Through his innovative projects and dynamic performances, Thomas Dunford continues to shape the landscape of Baroque and early music worldwide.
