About Jennifer Batten

Jennifer Batten, born in 1957 in Upstate New York, is a pioneering guitarist renowned for her technical mastery and influential presence in the male-dominated rock shred scene of the late 1980s. Inspired by her older sister and early rock icons like The Beatles and The Monkees, Batten picked up the electric guitar at age eight. After moving to San Diego, California, she deepened her skills by enrolling at the Guitar Institute of Technology (G.I.T.) in 1979, where she perfected the innovative two-handed tapping technique—a style she later codified in her instructional book *Two Hand Rock*.

Batten’s breakthrough came in 1987 when she tactically auditioned on the final day for Michael Jackson’s Bad World Tour, securing her role as the King of Pop’s lead guitarist. She toured extensively for Jackson’s *Bad* (1987), *Dangerous* (1991), and *HIStory* (1995) albums, becoming a distinctive visual and musical presence in videos like "Another Part of Me" and performing at landmark events such as the Super Bowl halftime show. Beyond this high-profile collaboration, Batten launched a solo career with acclaimed albums including *Above Below and Beyond* (1992), *Momentum* (1997), and the instrumental *Whatever* (2007).

In 1998, she expanded her versatility by joining legendary guitarist Jeff Beck’s band, contributing to his albums *Who Else!* (1999) and *You Had It Coming* (2001). Throughout her career, Jennifer Batten has balanced solo projects, groundbreaking instructional work, and collaborations with renowned artists, solidifying her legacy as one of rock music’s most influential female guitar virtuosos.
