About Javier Colina

Javier Colina, born in Pamplona in 1960, is widely regarded as one of Spain’s most gifted jazz bassists, celebrated for his warm, resonant tone and remarkable ability to blend diverse musical traditions. Initially trained in piano, accordion, and guitar, Colina ultimately found his true artistic voice through the double bass, which he largely taught himself. His professional career took off in the mid-1980s, marked by early collaborations with notable Spanish musicians like guitarist Perico Sambeat and pianist Jorge Rossy. He made his recording debut on Huecha’s album "Ciudad" (1988), quickly gaining recognition for his versatility across genres.

Colina’s playing effortlessly bridges flamenco, Afro-Cuban son, post-bop, and contemporary jazz, making him a sought-after collaborator. Over the decades, he has worked with jazz luminaries including Chano Domínguez, Pat Metheny, Hank Jones, and George Benson, while also earning distinction within flamenco circles through partnerships with legends like Tomatito, Diego El Cigala, and Enrique Morente. His longstanding collaboration with Domínguez, highlighted in albums such as "Chano & Colina" (2018), epitomizes his talent for fusing flamenco rhythms with jazz improvisation.

As a bandleader, Javier Colina has released critically acclaimed works including "Si Te Contara" (2002), "Live at the Village Vanguard" (2007) featuring Beto Valdés, and "Jazz a l'Estudi: Javier Colina" (2017). His trio also contributed to celebrated projects like Silvia Pérez Cruz’s "En La Imaginación" (2011), showcasing his enduring influence across genres. Javier Colina remains an essential figure in contemporary Spanish music, continuously redefining the boundaries of jazz and flamenco with passion and finesse.
