About Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin

Founded in 1982, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin (Akamus) has emerged as one of the world’s most esteemed chamber orchestras specializing in period instruments. Rooted in Berlin’s vibrant cultural scene, this ensemble has cultivated a distinguished international reputation, performing regularly at renowned venues across New York, Tokyo, London, and Buenos Aires. Akamus has maintained a long-standing residency at the Konzerthaus Berlin for over three decades and has collaborated extensively with the Staatsoper Berlin on Baroque repertoire since 1994. Since 2012, the orchestra has also curated a concert series at Munich’s Prinzregententheater, further enriching the global early music landscape.

Under the expert leadership of concertmasters Bernhard Forck and Georg Kallweit, Akamus sustains an artistically deep partnership with conductor René Jacobs. The orchestra frequently partners with celebrated soloists such as Isabelle Faust, Anna Prohaska, Bejun Mehta, Kit Armstrong, and Michael Volle, enhancing its repertoire and reach. Notable collaborations with ensembles like the RIAS Kammerchor and the Bavarian Radio Chorus have resulted in critically acclaimed, award-winning recordings. Over its four decades of activity, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin has earned prestigious accolades, including the Telemann-Preis Magdeburg (2006) and the Bach Medaille Leipzig (2014), solidifying its role as a pillar of historically informed performance practice worldwide.
