About Afterhours

Afterhours, founded in Milan in 1986 and named after a Velvet Underground song, stands as a seminal force in Italy’s alternative rock scene. Led by the charismatic and multifaceted Manuele "Manuel" Agnelli, the band initially recorded in English, debuting with their 7" single featuring "My Bit Boy" (1988) and gaining international attention with the EP "All the Good Children Go to Hell" (1990). This early phase blended Lou Reed-inspired rawness with melodic pop and caught the eye of international press such as NME and Alternative Press.

A defining shift occurred in 1995 when Afterhours embraced Italian lyrics with the album "Germi," featuring the now-classic "Dentro Marilyn," later famously covered by Mina. Their breakthrough came with "Hai Paura del Buio?" (1997), an album that fused psychedelic, acoustic, and grunge elements. The anthemic "Male di Miele" earned comparisons to Nirvana’s "Smells Like Teen Spirit," solidifying their status as pioneers of Italian indie rock. Subsequent albums like "Ballate per Piccole Iene" (2005), produced by Greg Dulli and mixed by John Parish, and "I Milanesi Ammazzano il Sabato" (2008) demonstrated their evolving sound and collaborative spirit.

Afterhours’ enduring influence was further cemented by their 2016 double album "Folfiri o Folfox," which became their first number-one on Italian charts, confirming their legacy as trailblazers and icons of Italy’s alternative music landscape.
