About Dur-Dur Band

Dur-Dur Band emerged in the 1980s as a seminal force in Somali funk and pop music, captivating audiences across Somalia and neighboring East African countries such as Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya. The name "Dur-Dur," meaning "spring" in Somali, symbolizes the group's vibrant creativity and enduring influence within Somali culture. Featuring legendary vocalists like Sahra Dawo, Pastow, Qoma, Eddi, and Shimali, alongside iconic bassist Abdillahi Ujerry and key members drawn from the Waaberi National Band and Iftin Band, Dur-Dur Band crafted a distinctive sound that fused funky oldies with contemporary Somali funk rhythms.

Their unique musical style propelled them to widespread acclaim throughout the region during the 1980s. However, the outbreak of the Somali civil war in 1991 abruptly disrupted their success, forcing many band members into exile across East Africa and Europe. Tragically, some musicians faced persecution and violence from extremist groups opposed to artistic expression. Despite these challenges, the band’s legacy persevered.

Revived as Dur-Dur Band International under the direction of executive manager Liban Noah, the London-based eight-piece ensemble continues to honor and expand their musical heritage. The modern lineup features original members like Abdillahi Ujerry, Mohamed Karama, Qomal, and Omar Teesiyow, with acclaimed vocalist Fadumina Hilowle leading their performances. Dur-Dur Band International has toured extensively across Europe, including Scandinavia, Germany, Holland, and the United Kingdom, garnering critical praise from press and radio. Today, they stand as the world’s only active live Somali music band, carrying the spirit of Somali funk to new generations around the globe.
