About Bess Atwell

British singer-songwriter Bess Atwell has carved a distinctive niche with her evocative and introspective music, blending raw emotion with a modern indie sensibility. Her 2024 album, *Light Sleeper* (2024), released on May 24th, marks a significant evolution in her sound and artistic approach. This transformative project was inspired by her spontaneous relocation to Canada, a move that sparked a deep reflection on past relationships, personal choices, and inner struggles.

Departing from her earlier instrumental style, Atwell embraces vulnerability through more stripped-back arrangements, emphasizing her powerful vocals. This shift was shaped in collaboration with acclaimed producer Aaron Dessner, known for his nuanced, emotive productions. Further expanding her sonic palette, Atwell spent three weeks working with esteemed producer Chris Coady—renowned for his work with Slowdive and Beach House—in California, adding fresh textures to the album’s sound.

*Light Sleeper* is marked by moody, ’80s-inspired tracks, including the standout single "The Act," which Atwell wrote during her time in Quebec. The song channels feelings of anger and anxiety into cathartic anthems, with Atwell describing parts of the album as “diss tracks” that confront unresolved emotions and unspoken words directed at people from her past. Despite health challenges and the emotional toll of living abroad, Bess Atwell harnessed these experiences to create a candid and empowering record. *Light Sleeper* ultimately stands as a testament to her artistic growth and resilience, offering listeners a deeply personal and authentic musical journey.
