About Bonga

Bonga, born José Adelino Barceló de Carvalho on September 5, 1942, is a legendary Angolan singer-songwriter whose music has become an enduring voice for his country’s independence and cultural identity. Before pursuing music, Bonga gained prominence as a record-breaking athlete in the 400-meter run within Portugal. His deep commitment to Angola’s liberation saw him join the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), leading to his exile in Europe during the 1970s.

While living in the Netherlands, Bonga began his musical journey, recording the landmark albums "Angola 72" and "Angola 74." These works fused traditional Angolan rhythms such as Semba with Portuguese influences, all delivered through his unmistakable raspy voice. His song "Mona Ki Ngi Xica" became an anthem of hope and resistance, resonating powerfully throughout Angola and beyond. Additionally, another track, "Sodade," gained further international acclaim through covers by renowned artists.

Following Angola’s independence in 1975, Bonga returned home briefly to perform with the government-supported orchestra Semba Tropical before settling in Lisbon due to ongoing civil unrest. Over more than five decades, he has released over 30 albums, including notable titles like "Mulemba Xangola" (2001), "Kaxexe" (2003), "Hora Kota" (2011), and his latest, "Kintal da Banda" (2022), showcasing his lasting creative vitality. Celebrated across Africa and Europe, Bonga remains a cornerstone of postcolonial African music, blending activism and artistry in a truly timeless legacy.
