About UNKLE

Since its inception in 1992, UNKLE has stood as the visionary musical project helmed by James Lavelle, co-founder of the pioneering UK independent label Mo' Wax. Originally a collaboration between Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy, UNKLE began rooted in sample-based hip-hop, drawing from underground scenes like electro and acid jazz. The project’s breakthrough came with the 1998 debut album "Psyence Fiction," crafted alongside DJ Shadow. This seminal record, which reached the UK Top Five, featured an extraordinary lineup including Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft, and Kool G Rap, establishing UNKLE’s signature blend of cinematic soundscapes, hip-hop, and rock.

Following DJ Shadow’s departure, Lavelle partnered with Richard File for 2003’s "Never, Never Land," which leaned towards more band-oriented arrangements and showcased contributions from Josh Homme, Brian Eno, and Jarvis Cocker. The album marked a shift towards greater songwriting diversity and broader sonic experimentation.

With Pablo Clements joining the fold, UNKLE continued evolving through albums like "Where Did the Night Fall" (2010), featuring collaborators such as Mark Lanegan and Chris Goss. After a seven-year hiatus, UNKLE returned with the dark, atmospheric "The Road: Part I" (2017) and its sequel "The Road: Part II (Lost Highway)" (2019), solidifying the project’s reputation for immersive, genre-defying music.

Beyond recording, James Lavelle has played a vital role in alternative music culture, producing works like Queens of the Stone Age’s "...Like Clockwork" and curating the 2014 Meltdown Festival. UNKLE remains a dynamic, ever-evolving force at the intersection of electronic, rock, and hip-hop innovation.
