About Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is one of Asia’s leading classical music ensembles, celebrated for its rich fusion of Western and Asian repertoires. Originating in 1947 as the Sino-British Orchestra, it began as a modest group of about 20 musicians led by violinist Simon Bard. Renamed the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra a decade later in 1957, the ensemble gradually transformed from a chamber-sized group into a full-scale professional symphony orchestra under visionary leaders like Lim Kektjiang and Hans Günter Mommer. By 1978, the orchestra had expanded to nearly 80 musicians, emphasizing European masterpieces while maintaining a dedication to Asian and Chinese compositions.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the orchestra advanced its artistic profile through international tours and acclaimed recordings of composers such as Villa-Lobos and Stravinsky. Simultaneously, it championed regional works like Chen Peixun’s “Fantasia on Cantonese Folk Themes,” reflecting its unique cultural identity. Under conductors including Kenneth Schermerhorn, David Atherton, and later Jaap van Zweden, who has led the orchestra since 2012, the Hong Kong Philharmonic reached historic milestones. Notably, in 2015, it became the first Chinese orchestra to perform Wagner’s complete *Ring Cycle*, with the production documented on the Naxos label.

The orchestra’s collaborations with world-renowned soloists such as Yuja Wang, Deborah Voigt, and Yo-Yo Ma underscore its global prestige. Its recent 2023 recordings of Shostakovich’s Symphonies No. 5 and No. 9, conducted by van Zweden, reaffirm the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s status as a dynamic and authoritative force in the international classical music scene.
