About Caetano Veloso

Caetano Veloso, born in 1942 in Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahia, Brazil, is a towering figure in Brazilian culture renowned for his roles as a singer, poet, filmmaker, author, and political activist. Immersed in Bahia’s rich musical traditions and inspired by icons like João Gilberto, Veloso moved to Rio de Janeiro in the early 1960s, following his sister Maria Bethânia. He gained early attention with the song "Um Dia" and landed a contract with Philips Records.

Veloso’s groundbreaking influence emerged prominently through the Tropicália movement, which he co-founded with Gilberto Gil. This genre-defying fusion blended samba, bossa nova, folk-rock, art rock, funk, and jazz, challenging Brazil’s military dictatorship with its bold artistic and political statements. This resistance led to his imprisonment and subsequent exile in London from 1969 to 1972.

His self-titled trilogy of albums (1968–1971) established him as a provocative innovator. Landmark records such as "Transa" (1972) and "Estrangeiro" (1989) deepened his exploration of musical boundaries, while "Livro" (1998) earned him a Latin Grammy for Best MPB Album. Veloso’s collaboration with Gilberto Gil on "Tropicália 2" (1993) and their joint world tours reinforced his enduring legacy.

In the 21st century, Veloso continued to evolve with albums like "Cê" (2006), "Zii e Zie" (2009), and "Abraçaço" (2012). Touring with his sons Moreno, Zeca, and Tom, he released the live album "Ofertório (Ao Vivo)" in 2018, proving his influence spans generations. Caetano Veloso remains a vital and pioneering force in global music, celebrated for his artistic courage and cultural leadership.
