About Afla Sackey & Afrik Bawantu

Afla Sackey & Afrik Bawantu have been captivating global audiences since their formation in 2006 with a vibrant blend of afrofunk, jazz, and afrobeat. Rooted deeply in Ghanaian culture—where dance and rhythm are life—the band's name, Bawantu, meaning "Let's Dance," reflects the infectious energy that defines their performances. Ghana-born percussionist, vocalist, and composer Afla Sackey began his artistic path as a dancer with the folk-inspired Bukom Ensemble. Recognized early for his musical talents, he transitioned into music under the guidance of seasoned mentors.

Sackey’s extensive experience as a session musician includes collaborations with legendary figures like Sun Ra, Ginger Baker, Tony Allen, Seun Kuti, Sons of Kemet, Dele Sosimi, and Yaaba Funk, underscoring his versatility and deep roots in Afrobeat and jazz traditions. To craft Afrik Bawantu’s distinctive sound, Sackey carefully recruited talented musicians from prestigious institutions such as the Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and SOAS University. This multinational ensemble features artists from Ghana, Nigeria, Spain, Israel, England, Greece, South Africa, Italy, Finland, and France, weaving together pulsating percussion, robust basslines, and soaring brass in a truly cross-cultural musical experience.

Afla Sackey & Afrik Bawantu’s dynamic synthesis of traditional African rhythms with contemporary jazz and funk elements has established them as a potent force on dance floors worldwide, embodying a modern afrobeat sound that is both timeless and innovative.
