About Edin Karamazov

Edin Karamazov, born in 1965 in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a distinguished guitarist and lutenist renowned for his mastery across early music and contemporary crossover genres. Early in his career, he studied guitar under the influential conductor Sergiu Celibidache and later specialized in Baroque lute with Hopkinson Smith at the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Karamazov’s international breakthrough came in 1998 when he stepped in for the legendary Julian Bream, launching a flourishing concert career across Europe.

Karamazov’s versatile musicianship has led to significant collaborations, including the acclaimed 2001 album "Wayfaring Stranger" with countertenor Andreas Scholl and the innovative 2007 project "The Journey and the Labyrinth" with rock artist Sting, which reimagined the lute music of John Dowland. His solo album "The Lute Is a Song" (2008) features guest performances by Sting, soprano Renée Fleming, and Macedonian singer Kaliopi, highlighting his ability to bridge classical and modern styles.

Throughout his career, Karamazov has performed at prestigious venues such as Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Wigmore Hall, and Berlin’s Philharmonie. He has collaborated with leading early music ensembles including Hesperion XXI, L’Arpeggiata, and The Hilliard Ensemble, and recently contributed to projects like the 2020 album "Con Guitarra" with soprano Nuria Rial and the 2021 release "Dialoge: Johann Sebastian Bach" with recorder virtuoso Dorothee Oberlinger. Despite his global acclaim, Karamazov remains connected to his roots, occasionally playing lute in public spaces, a practice reminiscent of his early student days.
