About Munich Philharmonic Orchestra

Founded in 1893, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra stands as a pillar of classical music, widely celebrated for its masterful interpretations of the Austro-German repertoire. Based at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich—one of Europe’s vibrant classical music centers—the orchestra has built an enduring legacy through landmark premieres, most notably Gustav Mahler’s monumental *Symphony No. 8* (the “Symphony of a Thousand”).

Under the nearly two-decade leadership of Sergiu Celibidache, the Munich Philharmonic developed a unique, deeply expressive sound, highlighted by legendary performances of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies. This era propelled the orchestra to international prominence. Successive chief conductors, including James Levine (from 1999), Christian Thielemann, Lorin Maazel, and Valery Gergiev (beginning in 2015), have expanded the ensemble’s artistic reach. Gergiev, in particular, introduced ambitious projects featuring complete symphonic cycles by composers such as Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninov.

The orchestra regularly tours across Europe, Asia—including Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan—and the United States, sharing its refined sound with global audiences. Embracing modern technology, their concerts are broadcast live on radio, television, and online streaming platforms. Since launching its own label, »MPHIL«, in 2016, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra continues to preserve and showcase its exceptional artistry to listeners worldwide, solidifying its role as Munich’s premier symphonic ambassador and a leading force in the classical music world.
