About Violent Femmes

Violent Femmes, formed in Milwaukee in the early 1980s, stand as one of the most influential bands in American alternative rock history. The trio—vocalist and guitarist Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, and percussionist Victor DeLorenzo—crafted a distinctive folk-punk sound that fused acoustic instrumentation with raw, neurotic energy. Their 1983 self-titled debut album, featuring enduring anthems like "Blister in the Sun," "Kiss Off," and "Add It Up," initially flew under the mainstream radar but gradually achieved platinum status, becoming a rite of passage for alternative music fans.

Their breakthrough was facilitated by a chance discovery while busking, which led to a record deal with Slash Records. Violent Femmes expanded their sonic palette on subsequent albums such as the spiritually charged "Hallowed Ground" (1984) and the Jerry Harrison-produced "The Blind Leading the Naked" (1986). Through the ’80s and ’90s, they incorporated elements of folk, country, and mainstream rock, highlighted by the 1991 album "Why Do Birds Sing?" which included a notable cover of Culture Club’s "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?"

Despite lineup changes and hiatuses, Violent Femmes returned revitalized in the 2010s after resolving internal disputes. They released "We Can Do Anything" (2016), their first studio album in sixteen years, followed by "Hotel Last Resort" (2019), featuring collaborations with artists like Tom Verlaine. Celebrating over four decades since their formation, the band marked the 40th anniversary of their debut in 2023 with a deluxe reissue featuring remastered tracks and rare recordings, solidifying Violent Femmes' legacy as pioneers of alternative rock whose blend of humor, angst, and catchy melodies continues to resonate.
