About Shearwater

Shearwater, an indie rock band formed in Austin, Texas, in 1999, has built a distinguished career over more than two decades under the leadership of singer-songwriter Jonathan Meiburg. Known for their dynamic and evolving sound, Shearwater has released a series of critically acclaimed albums that showcase a range from lush, orchestral art-rock to more stripped-down, energetic anthems. Albums like "Rook" and "The Golden Archipelago" (both released through Matador Records) highlight their expansive, emotionally resonant soundscapes, while later works such as "Jet Plane and Oxbow" and "Animal Joy" (released on Sub Pop) demonstrate a leaner, driving intensity.

Shearwater’s music is celebrated for its intricate arrangements and deep emotional complexity, seamlessly weaving joy, sorrow, hope, and anger into captivating compositions. Their artistry caught wider attention through tours with notable acts like St. Vincent and Coldplay, further cementing their influence within the indie rock community. A notable highlight in their career was the 2018 reinterpretation of David Bowie’s iconic Berlin Trilogy for WNYC’s New Sounds program, showcasing their creative ambition and interpretive skill.

Their most recent album, "The Great Awakening" (2022), stands as one of their most powerful and cohesive projects, continuing to inspire listeners. For newcomers and longtime fans alike, Shearwater offers a rich, immersive catalog that exemplifies innovation and emotional depth in contemporary indie music.
