About Sam Shackleton

Sam Shackleton, known by his Gaelic stage name Sorley the Bard, is a distinguished Scottish singer-songwriter celebrated for his dynamic fusion of traditional folk, country, blues, and old-time music, all deeply rooted in Scotland’s rich cultural heritage. Born in Stirling and raised across Scotland's diverse landscapes—from the Borders to the Highlands—Shackleton draws profound inspiration from the oral traditions, historic ballads, and rugged scenery that have shaped Celtic music for generations. His sound resonates with the spirit of the 1960s folk revival while weaving in influences from intertwined folk cultures of Ireland and the United States, creating a fresh yet timeless musical experience.

A scholar as well as an artist, Shackleton holds a research master’s degree with distinction in Scottish Ethnology from the prestigious School of Scottish Studies, where he specialized in folklore and ethnomusicology. This academic grounding enriches his songwriting and performances, allowing him to honor and evolve the legacy of traveling storytellers and bards. Whether performing on stages or busking internationally, Sorley the Bard captivates audiences with emotionally charged and authentic renditions of both original compositions and historic ballads. His artistry keeps the living tradition of folk music vibrant, bridging past and present through an engaging, heartfelt craft that continues to attract devoted listeners worldwide.
