About Kool & the Gang

Kool & the Gang, founded in the mid-1960s in Jersey City, New Jersey, by brothers Robert "Kool" Bell and Ronald Bell (later known as Khalis Bayyan), began as a jazz-influenced ensemble initially called the Jazziacs. Inspired by their father’s passion for jazz and his connections with legends like Thelonious Monk, the group blended sophisticated jazz elements with soulful rhythms, eventually evolving into one of the most influential funk and R&B bands in music history. Their breakthrough came with the 1973 album "Wild and Peaceful," featuring timeless funk hits like "Jungle Boogie," "Hollywood Swinging," and "Funky Stuff," which solidified their place alongside contemporaries such as James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic.

After weathering a dip in popularity during the disco era, Kool & the Gang revitalized their sound by adding vocalist James "J.T." Taylor in 1979 and teaming up with renowned jazz fusion producer Eumir Deodato. This collaboration produced platinum-selling albums including "Ladies Night" (1979) and the iconic "Celebrate!" (1980), which boasts the evergreen anthem "Celebration"—a staple at celebrations worldwide. Throughout the 1980s, they continued to dominate charts with hits like "Get Down on It," "Joanna," and "Cherish," showcasing their versatility across infectious dance grooves and heartfelt ballads.

Kool & the Gang's ability to bridge generations and genres has kept them relevant well into the 21st century, with releases like "Gangland" (2001) and "Still Kool" (2007), cementing their legacy as pioneers who transformed jazz roots into enduring funk and R&B excellence.
