About Roly Porter

Roly Porter is a Bristol-based electronic musician and composer whose innovative journey began as one half of the groundbreaking dubstep duo Vex'd, alongside Jamie Teasdale. Emerging in the early 2000s, Vex'd made a lasting impact on the electronic music scene with their 2005 debut album, "Degenerate," released on Planet Mu. The album combined aggressive basslines with influences ranging from dancehall and dub reggae to industrial noise, helping to shape the evolving dubstep landscape.

Following Vex'd's dissolution around 2008, Porter temporarily stepped away from music, focusing on carpentry and family life. He reemerged in 2011 with his solo debut, "Aftertime," released on Subtext, a label he co-founded. This marked a striking departure from club-oriented sounds, presenting haunting, cinematic compositions that intertwined classical string arrangements and the ethereal Ondes Martenot—played by Cynthia Millar—with intense layers of distortion.

Porter continued to expand his sonic palette through his follow-up albums. "Life Cycle of a Massive Star" (2013) delved deeper into blending classical influences with dense, textured sound design and intricate rhythms. His 2016 release, "Third Law," through Tri Angle Records, further established his signature style: immersive, epic soundscapes that push the boundaries of electronic music into new experimental realms.

Beyond his solo work, Porter has collaborated with various artists, including co-producing for WIFE and reconnecting with Teasdale in projects like Kuedo. His evolution from dubstep pioneer to a leading voice in experimental electronic music marks Roly Porter as an enduring figure in contemporary sound art.
