Description
When she released her debut album, this is no longer a dream, five years ago, anaiis revealed that the process of creating those falsetto-sung soul songs had been “like expelling the poison that was invading my body.” Luckily for us, the body of this French-Senegalese singer based in London is like a vessel that periodically fills with emotions until they overflow and she needs to record new songs.
In the case of Devotion & The Black Divine, her new album, those emotions have come driven and multiplied by the experience of being a first-time mother. “I’ve never experienced anything that has tested me as much as motherhood has,” she has said in interviews where she has also explained that she now sees everyone “as someone else’s child.”
That depth also seems to have reached her music, which now resonates as if connected to the entire lineage of black sounds that has brought her here. Get your tickets for ANAIIS at Sala Villanos, Madrid!
