The Palácio Nacional da Ajuda has a history full of twists and turns! Originally dreamed up by King João V as a summer retreat in the early 18th century, its construction only kicked off after the original royal residence was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. The first version, made of wood, burned down in 1794. The current, fire-resistant building has been standing strong since then, hosting state ceremonies and events.
