Oude Kerk Amsterdam

Oude Kerk Amsterdam

It may be Amsterdam's oldest church, but the historic Oude Kerk is also an art museum, with unique exhibitions and spectacular temporary artworks on display throughout the year. See how years of Dutch history have been carefully preserved in the church's atmospheric medieval architecture. The church also houses about 2,000 tombstones. Some mark an actual grave; the rest are monuments commemorating important historical figures. An example is Admiral Jacob van Heemskerck; who lost his life in a naval battle with the Spanish fleet off Gibraltar in 1607. Of the many graves in the church, that of Saskia van Uylenburgh (1612-1642), Rembrandt's wife, is one of the most famous. The Old Church also houses a number of artists and their works, giving you a nice combination of the historic past and the contemporary present.
