🌟 Despite being a philosopher as well as a musician, John Maus has spent the last two decades building a career that’s far removed from anything rational. The moves that have shaped his trajectory—initially linked to his friend Ariel Pink and Animal Collective—have always painted the image of a chaotic, impulsive, almost primal artist. Anyone who’s seen him twist and sweat on stage knows what that means: John Maus pulls his hair and bangs the mic against his head like a synth-punk spirit has possessed him. After releasing Screen Memories and Addendum, his pair of albums between 2017 and 2018, this creative beast retreated, utterly exhausted, into his lair. A cave full of self-built synthesizers and hacked old keyboards. It took him years to gather the energy to play them again. A kind of retreat that only deepened his fascinating aura as a cult artist—a cursed genius. Now, finally, he’s emerging from that refuge to release Later Than You Think, his long-awaited comeback album and his first on new label Young. John Maus will present it live on November 8 at Capitólio in Lisbon.
