Description
TCJCW is a collection of like-minded composers who in mid-2017, starting with the four founders: Asuka Kakitani, Aaron Hedenstrom, Adam Meckler, and JC Sanford, and later joined by Dave Stamps and Kari Musil, came together to share their music with each other and the Twin Cities area. Since then, many musicians have participated in the workshop. Their mission is to: foster creative and forward-looking composition for the modern jazz orchestra in the Twin Cities area provide an environment where developing and advanced composers can present and discuss their works and processes and get feedback from fellow composers in an open and constructive setting provide opportunities for composers to have their pieces workshopped and performed by a high-quality professional jazz orchestra. Workshop participants meet in advance in regular reading sessions as their works evolve over time with input from the other composers and ensemble members. The concert will premiere brand new works by JC Sanford, John Baumgartner, Ella Grace, Alex Karye, Zach Luginbill, and Jack Schabert and will feature the stellar 17-piece jazz orchestra known as the Jazz Composers’ Workshop Orchestra. The JCWO personnel includes Twin Cities stalwarts such as saxophonists Doug Haining and Bryan Murray, trumpeter Jake Baldwin, trombonists Jeff Rinear and Matt Echols, guitarist Toivo Hanagan, drummer Reid Kennedy, and special guest from Appleton, WI, bassist Mark Urness, and pianist Will Kjeer, briefly home from NYC.
