Description
Grigory Sokolov was born in Leningrad on April 18, 1950. He began playing the piano at the age of five and, two years later, began his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory. Sokolov's prodigious talent was recognized in 1966 when, at the age of 16, he won the First Prize and Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, becoming the youngest pianist ever to receive it and having his work praised by Emil Gilels, president of the jury. Although Grigory Sokolov toured extensively in the United States and Japan in the 1970s, his art evolved and matured away from the international spotlight. He has performed as a concert soloist with orchestras of the highest level, working with the New York Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, the London Philharmonic, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfuns and the Munich Philharmonic, among others, before deciding to focus exclusively on solo recitals. Sokolov gives around 70 concerts each season, immersing himself in a single program and touring extensively throughout Europe.
