Description
Science and technology represent the frontier of ideas and tools. These frontiers can be scary for the general public. One proven, effective way to combat fear is through humor. Humor increases energy, interest, and approval of a topic. Audiences retain more information longer when they enjoy receiving it. Humor makes audiences think you have greater expertise. We are conducting a study by the University of Utah and our results show our specific brand of ""bridge-building"" humor helps make scientists more persuasive (not yet published). Hello SciCom is an agency of science comedy consultants who can help you make your pitches, presentations, articles, webcopy, and papers funnier and more entertaining. We help to make any idea in STEM more entertaining. For example: Our humorous piece on aging for Proto.life drove 40,000 people to their site and led to 100 subscriptions. We've helped Nautilus science magazine go viral. We helped a Honda robot become 25% more mindful through humor in a study that won a ""Best Entertainment and Amusement Paper"" award. We've worked with names and brands like Neil deGrasse Tyson and the UN. We’ve given these presentations at Yale, the Kennedy Center, & SXSW. Our services include: speeches, presentations, speech coaching, infographics, marketing materials, event assistance, social media posts, talking points, newsletters, and creative consulting. The Hello SciCom Science Comedy Workshop will give attendees specific skills, tools, and feedback to create more engaging public-facing communications, whether that be a Ted Talk, social media strategies, writing, marketing, and more. Participants are also welcome to attend without specific projects in mind in order to get a general lesson on comedy writing for a scientific audience. Attendees will fill out a pre-workshop survey so that the Hello SciCom can best assess their needs. The workshop will kick off with a keynote speech by Sarah Rose Siskind, the founder of Hello SciCom, which provides an overview of the science comedy landscape, specific science comedy case studies, and the types of humor best suited for science comedy. Afterwards, attendees will play improv and other comedy games to warm up their creative sides and will then break into groups to discuss their specific projects and needs. Groups will be led by Hello SciCom staff who specialize in performance, writing, and science communications. This is a great time for attendees to get personalized feedback, joke-pitches, and network with other audience members. At the end of the workshop, attendees will receive a certification of their science comedy skills and leave with a joke-writing curriculum, suggested readings, and personalized ideas for how to make their projects more engaging. For any scientists or STEM professionals looking to make their communications more accessible, engaging, and entertaining, this is not one to miss! Sarah Rose Siskind is the founder of Hello SciCom. Previously, she was head writer for Neil deGrasse Tyson's TV show StarTalk on Fox. Before that she was a chatbot writer for Sophia the robot. She’s also a psychedelic comedian featured in the New Yorker, wrote jokes for the White House Press Correspondents' dinner and did a bird call on the Letterman show. She’s currently executive producing a science comedy TV show on National Geographic. Sarah Adelman is a stand-up comedian, and trained as a reproductive health research scientist. She graduated Cum Laude from Dartmouth College and earned her Masters of Public Health from Columbia University in 2021, where she focused on maternal-child health disparities. She's a regular at Stand Up NY, New York Comedy Club, Greenwich Village Comedy Club, and has a large following on TikTok & Instagram.
