The Querelle broke out in 1752 after a performance of Pergolese's Serva Padrona, dividing the Parisian intelligentsia into two camps: those in favor of the Italian style, supported by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and those in favor of the French style, led by Jean-Philippe Rameau. This dispute, seemingly anecdotal today, was actually a soft power issue in the 18th century. Rousseau evokes the natural link between language and music in Baroque composers, unreservedly condemning French music. For him, the absence of meter and melody in French music can be explained by the limitations of the language, describing French singing as "continuous barking" and harmony as "crude". The Toulouse Chamber Orchestra, by reviving the music of Locatelli and Vivaldi, helps to transcend this musical quarrel. As a result, the 18th-century argument has lost all relevance today.
