Oulu Cathedral is located in the city center and serves as the main church of the Diocese of Oulu as well as the parish church of the Oulu Cathedral Parish. The original stone church was completed in 1777, but it was severely damaged in the Great Fire of Oulu in 1822. The church was rebuilt on the surviving stone structures, and its current appearance was designed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel in 1832.
